When something closes it is not the end, but it is only the beginning. Over the next few moments I will show you the top five Walt Disney World expansions according to my opinion. Some of these may not be true expansions, but I am considering an expansion to be a complete overhaul of any attractions or the entire area of a section of a park. HERE WE GO!!!
5: Future World East (EPCOT)
-Current Attractions: Test Track, Mission Space, Guardians of the Galaxy Coaster.
-Former Attractions: World of Motion, Horizons, Universe of Energy.
There are three reasons this is number five. One is all the new attractions replaced former attractions meaning it is not a true expansion. The second is the fact these are and will become some of the most iconic attractions in EPCOT history, including the former. Lastly, I believe that this area is so spread out that it really gives each attraction its chance to shine by their self.
4: Sunset Boulevard (Disney’s Hollywood Studios)
-Current Attractions: Rock N Roller Coaster, Tower of Terror, Lightning McQueen Racing Academy, Beauty and The Beast Live on Stage, Fantasmic! (night time show)
-Former Attractions: None
This is one of my favorite areas in any park and ranking this at four is very tough. I absolutely love the theming at night time. Tower of Terror has the best overall ride experience in Disney World from the pre-show to the ride. Rock N Roller Coaster is one of my top three favorite rides and has a great pre-show as well. Beauty and The Beast Live on Stage is a great broadway style show. Fantasmic is a show that is incredible or should I say fantastic. Anyone who has been to this park and area can tell you that this is a must do when you are at this park.
3: New Fantasyland (Magic Kingdom)
Note: I am only accounting for the new portion of Fantasyland
-Current Attractions: The Barnstormer, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Enchanted Tales with Belle, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Under The Sea~Journey of The Little Mermaid
-Former Attractions: Mickeys Toontown Fair (various attractions)
Built as an expansion to the classic section of Magic Kingdom this area expanded what is the most famous land in all of Walt Disney World. Two of these attractions already existed and were moved and updated (Dumbo and The Barnstormer). The remaining attractions were all built from the ground up. This is a great area for the whole family as there is something for everyone no matter how young or old. I am in my early 20s and love Fantasyland. The new area also has a great playground area for children to play at. This is a great area, but it does not even touch the top two.
2: Pandora: The World of Avatar (Disney's Animal Kingdom)
-Current Attractions: Na'vi River Journey, Avatar: Flight of Passage
-Former Attractions: Camp Minnie-Mickey (various attractions)
This is a brand-new expansion that opened in 2017. It is easy to say that this is the most heavily themed area in a Disney park for the time being. There are two separate experiences during the day and at night. Avatar: Flight of Passage is the best ride at Disney World because of the features it has. Oh, and the food in this area is incredible as well. This is my current favorite area in any of the parks because it flows so well as a story.
1: Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge (Disney's Hollywood Studios) (OPENS AUGUST 29th, 2019)
-Current Attractions: Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run
-Future Attractions: Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (will open as a phase two of the new land)
-Former Attractions: Lights, Motors Action! Extreme Stunt Show
In what is being called the most expansive and immersive expansion in the history of Disney parks this is going to shatter the previous stated areas. The theming to the attractions to the food and so many more details. This opens on May 31, 2019 in Disneyland in California but is opening in late August 2019 in Florida. There is not a whole lot I can say about the area because it has not opened yet, but I do have a few comments. First, the Rise of the Resistance attraction will open later on after the area is already opened. You can expect long lines for everything in this area. You can also expect to be fully immersed in the world of Batuu. This will be Disney's most elaborate creation ever and I expect it to be great.
